Master craftsman hand-planing timber in workshop

Craftsmanship

Behind every piece lies decades of accumulated skill, traditional techniques passed through generations, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

The Hands Behind the Work

In an age of automation, we choose the deliberate path. Each surface passes through skilled hands multiple times. Every joint is cut, fitted, and refined by craftspeople who have dedicated their lives to this work.

This is not nostalgia. It is the recognition that machines cannot replicate the sensitivity of human touch, the intuition developed over thousands of hours, or the pride that transforms wood into heirlooms.

Traditional mortise and tenon joinery

Mortise and Tenon

The foundation of structural furniture for millennia. We cut each mortise and tenon by hand, ensuring perfect fit and alignment. These joints will remain tight for generations, expanding and contracting with seasonal humidity changes.

Where appropriate, we use wedged through-tenons that celebrate the joint as a design element.

Hand-cut dovetail joints

Hand-Cut Dovetails

The hallmark of fine drawer construction. Our dovetails are laid out, cut, and pared entirely by hand. The slight irregularities prove human involvement and create joints of superior strength.

Each drawer slides smoothly on traditional wooden runners, eliminating the need for metal hardware that can fail.

Hand planing a wooden surface smooth

Hand Planing

Final surfaces are prepared with hand planes, creating a quality impossible to achieve with sandpaper alone. The blade shears wood fibres cleanly, leaving a surface that catches light beautifully and feels alive to the touch.

This technique also burnishes the wood, creating a natural resistance to moisture and wear.

Natural oil finish being applied to wood

Natural Oil Finishes

We use hard-wearing natural oil and wax finishes that penetrate the wood rather than sitting on top. The result is a surface that feels like wood, not plastic, and can be maintained indefinitely.

These finishes enhance natural grain patterns and develop richer character with age and use.

The Tools of Our Trade

Our workshop houses both precision machinery and traditional hand tools, each serving its proper purpose.

Traditional hand tools in the workshop

Hand Tools

Hand planes, chisels, and saws accumulated over decades. Many were made before industrial production, and their quality remains unmatched. We maintain these tools meticulously, honing edges to sharpness that slices cleanly through hardwood.

Marking gauges, squares, and bevels ensure precision at every step.

Precision machinery in the workshop

Considered Machinery

Where appropriate, we use precision machinery for initial dimensioning and preparation. This allows more time for the hand work that truly matters: joinery, shaping, and finishing.

Our machines are maintained to exacting standards, ensuring they enhance rather than compromise our work.
